I Love My Job!

Alright, today was a great day!

I started the day with students in my room before school. These students are the newly elected Student Council. What is exciting is that our school district is going through a major reconfiguration. Students have been really seperated as grade levels starting in 5th grade and 6th grade. In fact, 7th and 8th have had little intertwining. This year the 6th grade will be moving into our middle school building, making it three grade levels.

Our Student Council right now is 12 students from the 7th and 8th grades. Starting in January we will have 6 sixth graders joining us. Giving us several students to talk and share ideas, bringing our school together.

It was great listening to them talk this morning. Many things to talk about and get to know each other. It also gives me a chance to see students in a different light.

I then started the individual investigations in my Science classes. Students all talking and finding a topic that interests them. I may go crazy keeping up with all 50 or so projects, but it’s great to see them excited and working in pairs. Many are friends that may not always be the best to work together, but they are doing great!

I then went outside to help with concessions. Having a chance to talk with parents and teachers and students outside of school and get to know each other is great! Talking about school all the time is tough. Also, getting to know them as people is always a plus!

I ended the night with our Team Family night. We had students and families come for a photo scavenger hunt around the school and ice cream. Students walked around the school with their families and cell phones taking pictures. The best part is that an item on the list was to get a picture of an administrator.

Well, one was not available, so everyone came back at the set time with all items except that one. Then, our assistant principal goes walking by. All students jumped up from their seats running to get his picture! He goes running trying to hide, but they got him. He had no idea what was going on! I wish i could have gotten one of those pictures. It was great seeing the reaction.

Today was a great day to get to know students as people. Sometimes we as teachers forget that they are people. It’s great when we can see them for who they really are. Many want to learn and do their best. It’s our job to reach out to them and help them.

I hope everyone goes into the next few days lookign for ways to reach out and help students achieve their goals, even if it is just posing for a picture!
